Liesfeld Contractor played a central role in the development of the Asymmetric Warfare Group (AWG) Training Complex, a 700+ acre secure training campus for the United States Army at Fort A.P. Hill. Designed to simulate real-world combat conditions and urban conflict scenarios, the project was broken into three primary sectors: 800/1200 Meter Live-Fire Ranges, an Urban Training Environment, and an Administration & Support Area.
Liesfeld’s work included the construction of more than 15 miles of roadways — including stone, concrete, and asphalt segments, along with bridges, roundabouts, and large staging and parking areas. Across the campus, the team prepared over 50 building pads, supporting facilities such as a mock power plant, indoor range, administration buildings, and range control centers.
A standout feature of the project was the construction support for Central Virginia’s first modern subway tunnel, built specifically for military training. Liesfeld performed critical excavation and backfill operations for the tunnel, as well as site development around an on-campus rail yard.
On the live-fire ranges, Liesfeld installed two major target walls at the 800-meter range. At the 1200-meter range, the team placed a combination of stationary and moving units—150 infantry targets and 50 armor targets.
The AWG Training Complex supports the U.S. Army’s mission to equip soldiers to combat current and emerging threats worldwide. Liesfeld was proud to contribute to a facility recognized with the ENR Mid-Atlantic Best Government/Public Building Project Award in 2014.
