Overview
Liesfeld Contractor has been shaping Richmond’s riverfront for more than five decades, playing a foundational role in the region’s transformation from industrial corridor to vibrant cultural destination. From major infrastructure projects to civic landmarks and public spaces, Liesfeld’s contributions span generations of work along the banks of the James River.
A Legacy That Begins with the River
Liesfeld’s origin story is rooted in the riverfront. In 1972, the company was founded while performing flood cleanup and restoration following Hurricane Agnes. That same year, Liesfeld began work for Federal Paper at their Manchester facility—marking the beginning of a multi-decade connection to the industrial and cultural development of the riverfront corridor.
Key Riverfront Projects:

Liesfeld performed the full demolition of the historic penitentiary complex and constructed Spring Street in 1991, establishing future access to riverfront redevelopment.
- Richmond Floodwall Grading
Liesfeld returned to Manchester to support Kiewit Construction in major floodwall grading operations—an essential part of the city’s long-term flood protection strategy.

Impact and Complexity
Working in this historic, active corridor has required exceptional coordination—navigating tight urban work zones, protecting sensitive landmarks, and staging work around high-profile civic and cultural institutions. Many of these projects were performed concurrently with other active development, requiring flexible scheduling and seamless coordination with multiple stakeholders.
