Overview

Liesfeld Contractor served as the turnkey sitework partner for West Broad Marketplace, a major 62-acre commercial development located in the heart of Henrico County’s Short Pump retail corridor. The project was constructed in five distinct phases, including Infrastructure, Cabela’s, Wegmans, East Retail, and West Retail, and required extensive coordination across active construction zones.

Liesfeld performed the full site preparation package, including demolition, clearing, erosion control, grading, soil stabilization, rock excavation and crushing, storm sewer, water, sanitary, VDOT right-of-way improvements, site concrete, and asphalt paving. Notable infrastructure included five large underground sand filters for stormwater management and multiple retaining walls exceeding 30 feet in height, each with tieback systems and engineered backfill along major roadways and property lines.

A hallmark of the project was Liesfeld’s self-performed rock blasting and crushing operation, which included blasting, excavating, processing, and reusing over 90,000 cubic yards of rock as structural fill. In particularly sensitive areas near Broad Street utilities, Liesfeld used diamond-blade saws mounted on excavators to safely remove rock adjacent to existing infrastructure.

West Broad Marketplace was recognized with the 2018 Best Retail Project Award by the Greater Richmond Association of Commercial Real Estate (GRACRE). Liesfeld’s performance on this project builds on a long-standing legacy, having performed the majority of site development work throughout the Short Pump area over multiple decades.
