The first decade of the new century saw the company reaping the benefits of the robust economic period from 2000-2008, with undertaking a four year project for the development of Capital One’s 354 acre campus in western Goochland County. During this, period of the decade, the firm also prepared large sites for the downtown Richmond Philip Morris Research Facility, an Ace Hardware Distribution Facility in Dinwiddie County, the Stoney Point Fashion Park Regional Mall in Richmond, major site improvements to the Richmond Regional Raceway (NASCAR), and the development of the Rolls Royce Production Facility in Prince George County.
As the nation close into the “Great Recession” of 2009-2010, the firm undertook the necessary financial re-engineering dictated by the financial crisis. We again pursed work in the public sector…mostly the military sector conducting work of a large scale at Ft. AP Hill, Ft. Eustis, Ft. Lee as well as a significant job for an intelligence agency in called J.U.I.A.F. in Charlottesville, Virginia.

As the firm entered the early 1990’s, an economically stressed period, for the nation at large, the firm moved increasingly toward the public sector to locate projects. That said, the firm participated in the demolition at the old Virginia State Penitentiary and its associated site work in downtown Richmond, the construction of the Haynesville Medium Security Dormitory, the development of the Culpeper Medium Security Dormitory, and the site preparation associated with the New Kent Regional Jail.
On the Non-Public side, later in the decade, the company prepared sites for several Walmart stores, expanded the runway at the Louisa County Airport, conducted the site work for the renovations of Richmond Water Treatment Plant, and completed two large job s arising from the expansion of the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank and the area near the James River which abuts that bank. The company also completed its largest jobs to date toward the period 1995 through 1999 when sitework for Signet Bank’s Operations Center in Western Henrico County, Phase 1 & 2of the Motorola Production Facility in Goochland County and the “capping” of Henrico County’s Springfield Road Landfill. The firm also prepared a 120 acres of site for the Chesterfield County Public Safety Training Facility.

J.E. Liesfeld Contractor, Inc. began operations in May 1972 as the sole proprietorship of Joseph E. Liesfeld, Jr. As a sole proprietorship from 1972 through 1976, the company operated under the name of Joseph E. Liesfeld Excavating. During those years, the company was primarily in residential lot clearing and fine grading activities while simultaneously acquiring the personnel and machinery to undertake small commercial type work.
The company incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia on January 6, 1977 and was renamed J.E. Liesfeld Contractor, Inc. From the date of incorporation onward, the firm’s focus continue to transform itself from residential subdivision work to increasingly larger percentages of annual revenues arising from increasingly larger commercial jobs. The Tuckernuck Square Shopping Center in western Henrico County coupled with the Bramblewood Apartments in South Richmond, both completed in the late 1970’s, marked the true turning point from predominately residential lot related work to significantly sized commercial work.
